Buy: Beginner set of tools

/

This is a basic beginners tool set for pottery, but with the added extra of a nice wire clay cutter. Perfect for a beginner potter that just needs some tools to start their pottery journey. Please note these tools are entry level quality, great to get you started. They can rust if not looked after, and I would regularly use a knife sharpener to keep the edges sharp.

Here’s a description of each pottery tool visible in the photo:

  1. Loop Tool (Left): This tool is used for trimming, carving, and hollowing out clay. It is especially helpful for removing excess clay from the bottom of pots or for creating texture on the surface of a piece.
  2. Wire Loop Tool (Second from Left): Similar to the first loop tool but with a larger head, it's useful for larger-scale trimming, shaping, and hollowing. It works well for creating deeper grooves or removing bigger sections of clay.
  3. Wooden Modeling Tool (Third from Left): This wooden tool is used for shaping and smoothing out clay. It’s also excellent for adding or refining details on hand-built pottery or while throwing on the wheel.
  4. Needle Tool (Fourth from Left): This sharp, pointed tool is ideal for scoring clay, creating fine details, or cutting off excess clay. It's also often used to pop air bubbles or for delicate line work.
  5. Sponge (Bottom Left): A soft sponge is used for smoothing the surface of the clay, adding moisture, or wiping away excess water while throwing on the wheel.
  6. Wooden Rib (Bottom Middle): This is a flat, curved tool used for shaping, smoothing, and compressing clay. It's very useful for refining the shape of pottery, especially on the wheel.
  7. Flexible Metal Rib (Bottom Second from Right): The flexible metal rib is great for smoothing and compressing the clay surface, particularly on curved forms. It can also help with scraping excess clay off the surface.
  8. Wire Clay Cutter (Bottom Right): This tool is used for cutting larger blocks of clay or for slicing through thrown pieces to remove them from the wheel. I have added this as an extra to the pack. You won't see this in standard beginner packs, but its well worth paying the little extra to save your skin.

Each of these tools plays a vital role in the pottery process, whether you're hand-building or throwing on the wheel.
