A quiet, private space for pottery.

The potter&dabble studio is a small, light-filled space on our lifestyle block in Dairy Flat.

It is available on selected midweek days for potters who already know the basics and would like a couple of uninterrupted hours to throw, trim, decorate or continue their own work at their own pace.

Come on your own and enjoy having the space reserved just for you, or bring one pottery friend and share the studio.

The space is designed to be intentionally simple and calm. It may be somewhere to continue what you have been learning elsewhere, or simply a chance to step away from the everyday, settle into a quiet space and spend a little time doing something for yourself.

There are several ways you can use the space

Option 1: Time at the wheel

Two quiet hours at the wheel - just for you

For people who already know the basics and would like some extra time to practise, continue their own work or revisit something they have learned.

Use your session to throw, trim, work through an idea at your own pace, or simply enjoy some uninterrupted time with clay.

Come on your own and enjoy having the space reserved just for you, or bring one pottery friend and work alongside each other.

Previous wheel experience is required - this option is for people who have already learned the basics and can use a pottery wheel independently.

One potter · one wheel

Two hours — $55
Three hours — $75

Two potters · two wheels

Two hours — $85
Three hours — $120

Your session includes use of the pottery space, pottery wheel/s, adjustable stools, shared studio tools and work surfaces.

Please bring your own clay, bats and anything you need to safely take your work home.

Cleaning the wheels, tools and workspace is included within your booked time.

Two or three-hour sessions may be requested, subject to the remaining studio schedule.

Option 2: Working away from the wheel

The pottery space can also be booked without a wheel for underglazing, glazing, hand-building to finishing a small pottery project.

One potter · private use of the workspace (no wheel use)

Two hours — $35
Three hours — $45

Your session includes private use of the pottery space, shared work surfaces and basic studio tools.

Please bring your own clay, pottery work and any specialist materials or tools you need.

The use of glazes or other studio materials must be discussed before booking.

Option 3: one- to-one wheel session

Sometimes you have learned the basics but still have questions, feel unsure working independently or would benefit from slowing things down with someone beside you.

This two-hour session is shaped around what you would like help with.

We might work on centering, pulling more even walls, hand position, posture, controlling water, trimming, or understanding why something is not quite working.

One-to-one wheel session

Two hours — $125
One hour of focused one-to-one help, followed by one hour to practise independently.

Three hours — $145
One hour of focused one-to-one help, followed by two hours to practise independently.

Additional one-to-one teaching may be arranged at $70 per hour when needed

Completely new to pottery?

A structured beginner course through one of Auckland’s pottery studios will usually provide the best foundation for learning to throw.

A limited number of private first-time wheel sessions may occasionally be available by arrangement. These sessions focus on experiencing and understanding the basic process rather than producing a perfect finished piece in one visit.

Option 2 - Use our Frema Table top slab roller

Frema tabletop slab roller sessions

Our Frema tabletop slab roller is available on selected days for people who would like to prepare smooth, even slabs for their own hand-building projects.

It can be useful for:

platters and large plates
tiles and wall pieces
structured hand-built forms
textured slabs
preparing several slabs to take home and work with later

Private slab roller session

Up to one hour — $35

Additional 30 minutes — $10

The slab roller and workspace are reserved for your session.

Please bring:

your own prepared clay
boards or flat surfaces for carrying your slabs
templates, textures and project tools
wrapping or containers to protect the clay

Slab roller sessions are offered separately from wheel sessions and have their own selected dates and one-hour time slots.

Pottery Tools to use

During studio sessions, you’ll have access to shared tools and work surfaces.

A Giffin Grip and bat system are sometimes available to use in the studio, depending on availability. If you specifically wish to use these, let us know when booking and we’ll confirm what’s available on the day.

What to bring

Please bring:

your own clay
your preferred pottery tools and bats
an apron and hand towel
boards, boxes or containers for transporting your work
any pottery you plan to trim, decorate or continue working on
specialist tools or templates needed for your project

A small range of shared pottery tools and work surfaces is available.

Clay, glaze materials, storage and firing are not included

A selection of herbal teas and hot water is available in the studio. You are also welcome to bring your own coffee or favourite drink.

A few things to know before you visit

The potter&dabble studio is a small working pottery space on our lifestyle block in Dairy Flat.

It is also the home base for our pottery-wheel rental business, so pottery wheels regularly come and go. Studio sessions are offered on selected dates when the space can be set up and ready for making. I will do my best to arrange pickup & drop off times around these studio sessions so your time remains quiet and uninterrupted.

The studio has cold running water, with warm water provided for handwashing during the colder months.

Bathroom facilities are available in the nearby house rather than inside the pottery space.

As this is a working lifestyle property, you may occasionally hear farm activity, see animals nearby or notice the normal comings and goings of rural life.

Payment and cancellations

Payment is via internet banking. Your booking will be confirmed once payment has been received.

If you need to cancel or change your session, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice. With sufficient notice, your payment can be transferred to another available studio session. Cancellations made within 24 hours, and missed sessions, are non-refundable.

If potter&dabble needs to cancel your session, you can choose another available date or receive a full refund.
